Is the Average Penis Size Overestimated?

I've been wandering this after a recent incident I had where a girl I slept with admitted to me that she had only got me into bed because a friend of hers who I'd slept with a few times last year told her I had a big Penis.

 

When she told me this I said well I must have been a bit of a dissapointment to her then and I was shocked at her reply which was that she wasnt and that I definitely had a "big dick". I've always thought I was slightly less than average in terms of length but quite thick so I asked her if she was just refering to just the girth and she said no she meant the length aswell.

 

If this is true and she had no reason to lie to me and I have been with her several times since for some casual fun so I cant see that she was dissapointed by my size having said she wanted to sleep with me because I was "big" are we overestimating the averag size when we think of it as about 5.5 inches long?

 

If I am as these 2 girls have said "big" is the actual average more to be something like 4.5 inches?

 

Hope this post makes sense as I'm sometimes not that great at putting into words what I mean to say.

Maybe some women can't really tell how large a penis is just by looking at it? I don't know--maybe they were both really tight?

 

Personally, I'd be insulted if a woman slept with me for my penis size, regardless of the issue.

 

Regardless, you're much larger than I am. I'm nowhere near your size in both departments. So even if the average size is somewhere around 4.5", I'm still beneath average. Just not quite as much, which would be nice to know, but I don't think it'd matter much to women who're looking for a "nice, big dick."

 

Still...it is interesting. I wonder what some of our female members might say about this?

It is your girth dude you are large in that department. A large girth will easily make up for average length. Every where I have read says women prefer girth over length in most cases. Sounds like you kick ass in bed so that probably just adds to the perception of the size of your dick.

5.75 inches, not 8 inches was huge! I showed her how to guestimate a man by showing how each of her fingers were approximately 3/4" wide and a hand (four fingers) was three inches, two hands were six inches.

 

As a gay man I've had the opportunity to witness about a hundred erections, quite of few of those in hand.

 

I'm amazed at the few huge specimens I've seen. I've seen penises smaller than mine. But by and far most of the penises I've handled were six to seven (relatively few qualified for seven) finger widths long -- that's between 4.5 and 5.25 inches long; which is more than enough for me!

 

I suspect the studies are skewed... for the most part, the smaller guys won't volunteer for penis size studies while larger endowed men readily volunteer.

I do think most women don't know how to estimate the size of anything. I'm not too bad at it, but only because I cheat. I know how to measure just about anything by comparing it to parts of my hand. If I had to guess the length of a penis just by looking, I wouldn't be able to tell. But I can tell you the distance from the tip of my middle finger to the heel of my hand.

I think from a hetero male's point of view porn really skews our perceptions of what an average sized dick is. Women and gay men tend to have a better gauge of these things for obvious reasons.

Too be honest, the more i look at my dick the smaller it seems to get. The real visual factor i think is body size v's penis size, a short guy of around 5'5" with a average dick will look bigger than a tall guy of around 6' 2 with the same equipment.

I've remarked that very same things several times.

 

When I'm "out and about" with another guy, I always like to see what the other guy has and play a little "touchy-feely". Most guys I get involved with are 4.5" (my average size, I know just how that feels in my hand). I'd say that the 4.5" average is more likely, given my personal experiences. I'd also say that it's more likely smaller guys won't go for penis surveys due to attitudes about size. I know I was always led to believe I was small when I was in High School, mostly due to the porno stars everyone talked about and such...

Thanks for backing my theory up on those studies. Even urologist studies will be off because I think a man with a smaller penis will be less likely to go to a urologist. The only way to get a true average study would be to kidnap 1000's of men randomly off the street and measure them. Any other study will be bias towards the larger than average.

Researching the way I do, I feel it's a medical reason or reasons why normal sexual characteristics do not mature during purberty. Any coments toward that theory?

Hi everyone. Rich, I've been in exactly the same situation with 2 girls. I've always thought I was smaller than average due to my watching of a fuck load of porn. Seeing SO MANY cocks looking like they're twice your size HAS to make you think you're below average.

On the other hand, the girl I was with last year had been with about 20 guys before me and said I was in the bottom 10 (bitch. but at least she was honest). She later corrected to say that I was probably smack bang in the middle, and of the guys that were bigger, they weren't heaps bigger. So I don't know.

 

I would love for a TRUE survey to come out about penis size. Dunno if it'll ever happen. It makes sense that larger guys are going to be far more willing to participate in a survey than smaller guys. So I would assume that size surveys are going to be overestimated. Even if there was a TRUE survey, guys overestimate. "I'll just round up to the nearest inch"...

Especially from the gay guys as I've never seen a penis erect except for my own its interesting to know that most of the ones you have come into contact with are generally smaller than the often quoted average sizes so it would lead me to think that all of the surveys are on the large side and that a true average length would probably more likely be somewhere nearer to 4.5 to 5 inches than what I mostly see which are 5.5 to 6 inches in all the surveys I've ever seen.

You know, this is pretty informative and interesting. It just really highlights the whole psychological aspect.

 

I've always been interested in how we may all just be decieving ourself by going on 'studies' that probably rely on a really limited pool of participants (or participants that give socially desirable responces like lying about their size) and this definitely has convinced me I might be onto something.

 

I'd recommend this post to anyone. Seriously. Anyone regardless of penis size could probably read this and learn a lot about how people percieve them.

Well, from my promiscuous days, I would say that most of the guys I've been with were between 5 and 5.5 inches. I think I've only ever been with two guys larger than me. My average could be a bit smaller--I didn't actually measure--but around 5" sounds right.

 

About some of the size surveys: two or three of them actually did take thousands of guys off the streets. These surveys were done in countries with mandatory military service and were done during the induction physical. Again, if memory serves, there averages were around 4.7 and 5 inches. I think Kinsey is largely to blame because he let the guys in his survey self-report. Either they exaggerated on purpose or they didn't each measure the same way.

 

The reason I started coming to this board is because it is a place that celebrates the ordinary penis.

Great thread! I was given "the book" about male puberty when I was a teen by my parents who were too shy to approach the subject directly. In the section on sexuality it stated that "the average penis size is 6 to 6.5" long when fully erect". It included a drawing that showed how to measure yourself to compare yourself to the average. So I pulled out a ruler and was bummed to find I was WAY below average. I kept checking my size from time to time afterwards but I stopped growing when I was 17.

 

When I was 17 I had a girlfriend who was VERY experienced for her age. When the time came I dropped my boxers and she was stunned at my size. "I've had boyfriends who are really tall and well... you are really close in size to them. Way bigger than I thought you'd be!" OK - I'm 5'6" tall and on a really good day I'm 4 inches long (probably my size on that day as she was gorgeous). So what does one make of this? Did I look bigger to her because I'm 5'6"? Did she think I was bigger because I'm thicker than most at 6" around? Or is the average actually shorter than most surveys suggest? She spread the word after we broke up that I was "big" and it got me considerable action. And the ladies who I hooked up with told me that I was "shorter than average but not by that much" and that I was considered big because I was "so thick - and thickness is way more important than length to most of us females."

 

As a recently divorced guy I have a new girlfriend who is very experienced sexually. She has the same take on this as my first gf - I'm much bigger than she thought I'd be based on my height and she considers my size to be big because I'm thick. She also says I'm "not that far off of average in length. Most guys are pretty close to an inch longer than you are." So given I'm 3.5 to 4" long that would put average at 4.5 to 5" long. Not at all the 6 to 6.5" average I was lead to believe in when I was a teen. So yeah, average would indeed appear to be overestimated.

I think the average penis size of 'six inches' could be an overestimate.

 

The survey that produced that figure was of course self measured giving room for exaggeration!

 

The lifestyles survey that got the 5.87 inches figure was done on a volunteer basis, so people with a larger penis were more likely to step forward for the survey.

 

The survey that produced 5.1 inches was done by medical staff on quite a random basis.

 

Many other surveys from around the world that used medical staff report figures much less than six inches. In fact Saudi Arabian and Brazillian studies reported an average penis size of 4.8 inches when erect.

 

However... in conversation it's likely that 'six inches' will stay as the average penis size, cos it's a lot easier to say than "five point eight seven inches" or whatever!
