You obviously meant "friend" in a different sense than I did when I first read the title of your thread. I'll respond in that sense. 

I'm a complex fellow (in certain respects). I enjoy the company of women. I still am good friends with my first wife; we talk on the phone or text three or four times a week. A good deal of this naturally relates to our son, but we generally enjoy each other. Probably more than when we were married. I also keep in touch with many women I dated or lived with. My wife has no trouble with this. She knows I'm head-over-heel for her. 

But I also have many close male friends. I played sports most my life and was in the Navy. I made many friends there, plus in high school and college. Strangely, I feel more "physically" close to my male friends than the women. I've never had any "sex" with them, but I've seen studies on "homoeroticism" in men's sports. I'm aware that there's an undercurrent of this in many of my close male relationships. I've been conscious all my life that my looks have similar effects on many men as they do on women, no matter how straight the men may be. It probably explains a great deal of my success in life. I won't go into details here, but some of these feelings have been expressed in physical ways, like hugging, etc., although stopping well short of out-and-out sex. One friend and I used to share the same bed on trips, even though a separate bed was available. My boss in my after-school job in college is gay. He became like a second father to me. Before I was married, when staying for the night, I'd often have a similar sleeping arrangement for some reason with his younger lover (who's my age and bi). No sex, but it certainly has led to a greater feeling of intimacy between us. 

As I said, I've been in sports most my life. I consequently have seen a good proportion of my friends naked sometime or another over the years. And vice versa. I can give no explanation for the greater intensity, but have often attributed it to some sort of male bonding that results from sharing one of the most important aspects of your masculinity.

First, let me say that in sports, the Navy, the gym that I have never been self-conscious of my size in the presence of other men. Of course they are bigger than I am, but no man has ever disparaged me. I guess I am big enough and hairy enough to not be fucked with.

When I was in the Navy, I was first attached to a Reserve Gold Crew. We would fly out to Jamestown, RI on a Friday night for a weekend of maneuvers on board a swayback WWII-era Tin Can. I was heading for OCS the next summer, and a kindly QM1 named Willy took me under his wing. "Strike for Quartermaster," he told me. "Everything you learn you will be able to use as a bridge officer." He was right about that. The first night I was shipboard, Willy escorted me to show me my rack.
