I have always as a child or young adult had a hangup (perhaps because there is no hang, just a little guy pointing straight out) about taking showers with other guys. eg in a gym locker room shower after a workout. I am almost always the smallest in the shower,  and remember comments from guys back in middle school mocking my diminutive manhood, and late development of pubic hair. Now, as an adult, I look forward to these showers, and I admit I am shaved near smooth. I am, full disclosure, straight but curious. I like to look at and compare cocks but have no romantic interest in men. I found group showers a little intimidating while at school, I was one of the youngest in my class so a little behind in growth and hair. College onwards, no issues being naked with others, a more mature group helped I suppose. 

I do compare to others and used to feel a little inadequate when I saw others with a larger swinging penis. But I always saw many many more just like me, often shrunken after exercise and not much showing.

I was fortunate at school in not having to take communal showers but I had been pantsed once in the locker room in front of some other guys which felt devastating, and I'd taken a few jokes about my lack of bulge in speedos during swimming before too.

Getting undressed in front of other guys and the prospect of having to use a communal shower massively put me off any kind of sports or gym activities as I got older too. I tried to use the local gym in my 20s because I wanted to bulk up (I'm pretty skinny) and I wasn't prepared to use the college gym bc I didn't want to have to be around guys I knew. How did it make you feel comparing in person with him? What were your sizes?

I've had limited experience with comparing in person, sexual partners and only once outright with a friend. My memory from the showers in High School were 100% noticing the two football players that seemed to be the most popular with the girls, were both very impressive flaccid. I hated having to shower with them any time after gym glass for the specific reason they were intimidating, so I'd always try to avoid entering the group showers until after they were done for that reason. I don't have many memories from the showers in high school. I remember looking at guys in the locker room but not so much in the showers. 

As an adult, most of the gyms I attended had private showers except one. It was like an "industrial-boxing" kind of gym with very old showers. I think there were only 4 (or maybe 5) communal showers in the open that were vissible from all the points of the locker room, so it was virtually impossible to have some privacy if you were intending to shower. I usually showered with the same guys as we all went to the same class and always was confortable. There was a guy who was shyer than the rest of us and always went to the shower covering himself, which, was like a waste of time because he was going to be exposed in the shower in any case

Boys routinely showered after PE in my junior high (ca. early 1980s). I, however, avoided the group showers at all costs. Looking back, I have no idea why the idea bothered me as much as it did.

Intially, I was uncomfortable (but also fascinated) seeing others' penises. I soon got over my discomfort seeing nudity.From that point on, I was left with a mix of fascination seeing the others shower and fear that my luck in avoiding the showers might end. At the same time, though, part of me wished I could shower with the others... I have thought it was too bad that I didn't at least try when I started 8th grade, when I had new classmates who didn't remember me from 7th grade. I also had a locker location very near the showers, minimizing that scary trek to the showers fully nude.

Throughout, I envied the boys who were apparently comfortable with nudity--particularly the ones who'd show off.

I got a certain amount of abuse for not showering with my classmates, like cracks that suggested I didn't have a penis.

8th grade was the last year I took PE. I pretty much stayed out of locker rooms from that point, until I was an adult.

When I started swimming regularly as an adult,I decided it would be nice if I'd grow a pair and use the showers nude. The first round (in an empty locker room) was difficult, but after that it wasn't bad. I even found myself enjoying the experience. (I have wondered if things had been different in junior high if I might have ended up one of the boys flaunting his nudity in the locker room...)

I remember one guy in my 7th grade PE class who seemed uncomfortable with the showers, although he went along with the program. I was a bit puzzled: he was well developed with a nice looking penis. (One day, though, I did enjoy seeing one guy who decided to shower with his back facing the wall.) One might only have a chance for a penis sighting on his way in or out of the showers. But the locker room had guys stripping off, walking nude to the showers (how I envied the guys who walked confidently across the locker room fully nude!), etc.

Not surprising. Unfortunately, open showers are as marketable these days as a 1990 Yugo. 

I even know of one pool in my area that has changed to private stalls. (Why?!? If you don't want to be nude, just wear your swim suit!)

That was probably the case. I remember the showers were open but probably most guys would shower facing the wall. I am guessing that if everybody did that I probably did as well but I don't really remember. However, I have much more vivid memories of the locker room and of guys being in the open while changing.

Also, I don't remember any of my classmates covering. Some would stay naked for a longer time and other would change fast. Most would change facing forward but a few may change facing to the wall so they were less vissible, but I can't remember anybody using a towel or covering up.

I think most of the gang showers I've used over the years were a square or rectangular room with shower heads dotted around the walls. So most would hang up their towel on a hook outside, walk in and find an open slot. 

Most would shower facing the wall, but occasionally would face outward to rinse or take to team mates. 

I would grab my towel on way out, usually wrap it around waist, not for modesty but to reduce drips from my body on the floor. I'd then dry myself next to locker and dress.

That's what I remember.

Indeed. I remember when I first sat this style of shower as a teenager, I was a bit jolted at how open it was. I may have thought and what I saw in my junior high locker room was bad! But there was also something exciting about the idea. I certainly envied the guy who could confidently shower with this setup.

I know that these were used in schools. I have to feel sorry for the boys who had to deal with group showers for the first time, were nervous about the idea, and had this style of shower. Although I suppose it can be argued that if you can survive this, you can survive any gym shower.

When I saw this style, the thought that you'd easily see other guys' penises did flash across my mind. That was confirmed years later when I actually used this type of shower. It's impossible not to see penises. And it was easy to take discreen looks at the guy opposite. Not that I'd do that. Oh, no, of course not!
