By Brian Alexander - The Body Odd on MSNBC - January 6, 2012

You’d think somebody repeatedly sticking a needle in your penis would be a little off-putting, but the 21-year-old Iranian apparently thought it would be a grand idea to have Persian script reading borow be salaamat (good luck on your journeys), and the first initial of his girlfriend’s last name (“M”) tattooed onto his little gentleman.

He was left with a permanent semi-erection as a reminder of just how good the idea was.

His case raises a number of questions, not least whether the wish for good luck is directed to the penis or to the man, and if it’s to the penis, where, exactly, is it going? But, medically speaking, how could getting penis inked make the organ go haywire?

The answer rests in the traditional technique the man subjected himself to.

“Handheld needles are used and there is no control of the depth of the needle,” Iranian urologists reported in the most recent Journal of Sexual Medicine. “Henna, ash, and other natural pigments are used by traditional tattooists. They first use their needles to penetrate the skin. Then they apply the coloring material on the perforated skin surface.”

Naturally, this proved painful. After several days, the pain subsided. Soon after it did, though, the man noticed that his nighttime woodies were lasting a long time. A week later, he had a 24/7 priapic erection.

As erectile dysfunction pill commercials constantly remind us, non-sex-related erections lasting longer than four hours are dangerous for penises. The lack of fresh blood flow can starve the spongy tissues of oxygen, destroying them and resulting in impotence.

There are two types of priapism, ischemic and non-ischemic, according to UCLA urologist Dr. Jeffrey Bassett. In a normal erection, blood flows into the penis via arteries, and as pressure builds, the veins leading out are temporarily blocked. In ischemic priapism, the veins don’t open up again.

In non-ischemic priapism, the veins allow blood out of the penile tissue, but too much blood is flowing in via the arteries and the veins can’t keep up. So blood pressure builds. This isn’t as dangerous since fresh blood is coming in all the time, but it can be pretty inconvenient. If it doesn’t resolve, either on its own or with treatment, it can cause damage in some cases.

Bassett once treated a 24-year-old skateboarder who’d traumatized his pelvic area in a skate accident. It tuned out that the injury caused a blood vessel fistula that interfered with normal flow into and out of the penis.

According to the Iranian doctors, this is what happened to the young man. The tattooist punctured too-deep holes that damaged vessels in the penis, resulting in fistulas, and then a pseudo-aneurysm, a pooling of blood outside a vessel wall. They recommended he see a specialist to have the blood removed, but he rejected that idea and saw another doctor to have a shunt procedure performed. It didn’t work.

Since the fellow is still able to have sex, and achieve a more-or-less normal erection, he’s rejected any more treatments, even the one his urologists recommended in the first place.

In one of those statements you’d think nobody would actually have to make, the Iranian doctors wrote “based on our unique case, we discourage penile tattooing.”
NEWARK, N.J. — Authorities say a New Jersey man who died after having his penis injected with silicone was trying to get it enlarged.

The woman police say gave the injection, resulting in his death, has been charged with manslaughter. She made her first court appearance Tuesday.

The Essex County prosecutor’s office says 34-year-old Kasia Rivera gave 22-year-old Justin Street the injection in May. She has pleaded not guilty but remains in jail on $75,000 bail.

Street died the day after his injection. His death was ruled a homicide following an investigation and a medical examiner’s determination he died of a silicone embolism.

Rivera also faces charges accusing her of the unauthorized practice of medicine out of her East Orange apartment. Authorities say they’re investigating whether she gave other people similar injections.
AUSTRALIA — For some, Speedos are synonymous with sex. For Speedo, the brand has something to do with swimwear. Go figure.

In Australia, a man known as the "Bisexual Blogger" and "aussiespeedoguy" has learned the hard way that while he may appreciate the special accentuation that Speedos bring to (certain) bodies, the company fails to share his passion in quite the same way. They have sued him in the Federal Court of Australia and won, and he must now take his “salacious and pornographic websites” down and hand the domain names over to Speedo. What they will do with them is unknown.

Dave Evans, who also operates a blog called aussiegayguy.com, did make a few mistakes. According to the Sidney Morning Herald, he “registered domain names containing the word ‘Speedo.’ Some of these sites featured images of men wearing Speedo briefs, as well as pornographic images, which Speedo claimed were offensive.”

On aussiegayguy, com, he links to Speedo sites such as swimmersexuality.com, gayblowbuddy.com, bisexualdave.com and speedomoviespage.com, and also to his own site, swimmerboyz.com. Needless to say, using a brand name in this way will usually result in a loss in court, and that’s just what happened here. Evans probably knew his fate, because he refused to attend the trial. Now he
has to pay Speedo’s legal costs, as well.

He is also not allowed to create any new sites using the name Speedo, nor any sites that feature the swimwear.
Average penis size revealed

By THE SUN - Staff Reporter

Published: 24 Oct 2011

Experts have published the most important research to affect mankind in decades — a groundbreaking study about the definitive size of the average penis. The study — carried out by top French medical organization The National Academy of Surgery — revealed the hard facts to try and curb a worrying increase in penis enlargement surgery.

The scientific report says the average male's manhood is 3.5 to 3.7 inches when flaccid and between 5 and 5.7 inches when erect. The Paris based group also says average circumference is between 3.3 and 3.5 inches when 'at rest' and between 3.9 and 4.1 inches when aroused.

The Academy said men needed to be aware of 'normal' penis size before they resorted to potentially dangerous operations. A statement added: "The feeling of having an insufficiently large penis can be a source of anxiety and psychological suffering for a man.

"There has been an increase in demand for penis-enlargement operations in recent years, due to what some people call 'locker-room syndrome. But these lengthening procedures may have only limited results and could have a risk of certain complications, in particular regarding erections."

The National Academy of Surgery is one of France's oldest medical bodies, created in 1731 by King Louis XV. It has more than 500 members specializing in different branches of surgery.
A South African court has blocked the government from buying 11 million Chinese condoms, saying they are too small, a newspaper reported Friday.

The finance ministry had awarded a contract to a firm called Siqamba Medical, which planned to buy the Phoenurse condoms from China, the Beeld newspaper said.

A rival firm, Sekunjalo Investments Corporation, turned to the High Court in Pretoria after losing the bid, arguing that their condoms were 20 percent larger than the Chinese ones.

Judge Sulet Potterill blocked the deal with Siqamba, ruling that the condoms were too small, made from the wrong material, and were not approved by the World Health Organisation, the paper said.

South Africa has more HIV infections than any country in the world, with 5.38 million of its 50 million people carrying the virus.

VirtualTourist.com Announces World's Top 10 Toilets Whether referred to as a restroom, loo, toilet, or otherwise, "the facilities" are always an important part of being on the go. With this in mind the members and editors of travel website VirtualTourist.com have compiled this list of the "World's Top 10 Toilets".

1) Bryant Park; New York City, NY
Who would have thought that a loo in the middle of such a dirty, noisy, frenetic city would have classical music, fresh flowers, and even an attendant! Visitors report that it's also spotlessly clean.

2) Covent Garden; London, U.K.
If visitors to the public restrooms at Covent Garden don't notice the cleanliness and efficiency of this facility on their own there's a prominent sign on the wall informing them of the place's 2011 "Loo of the Year" award.

3) Madonna Inn; San Luis Obispo, CA
It only makes sense that one of the world's quirkiest hotels would have one of the world's quirkiest restrooms; a waterfall urinal that comes to life when used. We can only imagine the surprise of the uninformed.

4) Thornbury Castle; South Gloucestershire, U.K.
Not only can you walk in the footsteps of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, but you can spend your first few minutes trying to find the hidden bathroom. In an effort to keep the secret we refuse to give away where it actually is.

5) Place de la Madeleine Public Toilets; Paris, France
Even a century of grime can't mar the beauty of the remarkable Art Nouveau facilities at the Place de la Madeline. Dating back to 1905, this stunner of a lavatory is as worth checking out as any of the city's other more...pardon the pun...mainstream attractions.

6) Scholastica Baths; Ephesus, Turkey
The public toilets here not only provide a glimpse into la vie quotidienne of ancient peoples but also a highly unusual photo op as modern day visitors are welcome to take a seat on the no-longer functional commodes.

7) The Outhouses of Elk Falls; Elk Falls, Kansas
An annual contest taking place every November, this competition and tour features outhouses that run the gamut from greenhouse-like rooms to mini-movie theaters. A high-stakes operation, organizers offer a first prize of $60.

8) Opera Toilet; Vienna, Austria
Complete with operatic music, murals of the interior of the city's opera house-proper, show posters, and even stalls referred to as "loges," the Opera toilets are the next best thing to being there.

9) UFO Restaurant; Bratislava, Slovakia
Rest assured that although these urinals face large windows, there is just enough frosted glass to keep the view appropriate to the outside world.

10) Hundertwasser Toilets; Vienna, Austria
Dubbed the "Toilet of Modern Art" this is the second restroom in Vienna to make our list. Its randomly shaped tiles in bold primary colors make this playful room a fun alternative to the average dreary public toilet.
New research issued by weight-management specialists LighterLife reveals that one in ten British men are unable to see their penis because of their protruding bellies.

PRWEB UK -- 16 June 2011

The research into the health of the nation’s men revealed that of those people, 43% hadn’t seen their penis in the last two years, without looking in a mirror or bending over, whilst 16% were unable to remember the last time they saw it.

From the research of 2,000 men it was easy to see why the health of British men was in such a poor state as:

30% of men surveyed admitted to drinking alcohol three times a week
One in ten admitted to boozing on a daily basis
21% claimed they rarely pay attention to what they eat - that figure rising to 29% amongst 35-44 year old men
One in ten men never exercise

However it seems that only in drastic circumstances would British males consider doing something about their weight, explaining why the nation is becoming more obese each year:

52% would lose weight if they were constantly embarrassed about the way they looked
36% of those interviewed would only lose weight if they grew man boobs
52% would only lose weight if they received a serious health warning from their doctor
35% would take action if they were unable to have sex for an extended period of time
25 % would shed the pounds after consistent nagging from their partner
21% would lose weight if they were unable to do up their shoe laces

Mandy Cassidy, psychotherapist for weight-loss and weight-management company, LighterLife for men says: “It’s apparent that some British men take a relaxed approach to health and to losing weight. Often, it’s only when something drastic happens, will they consider losing weight and becoming healthier, which is a real worry.

Mandy continues: “The research reveals it is clearly not only women who worry about their appearance when it comes to extra weight. Men should be looking at maintaining a healthy lifestyle at all times not waiting for an obvious change to motivate them into action!”

It seems that men would also consider other options before losing weight and being able to see their penis again. 34% of men would resort to creative shaving in order to make the length of their genitals appear larger, 19% would turn off the lights and 13% would even consider a penis pump before losing weight.

Dr David Bull, a doctor and medical broadcaster said “A man who is not able to see his willy should think seriously about his health. He’s clearly on the brink of being or is already overweight. This simple check to see if your beer gut is a cause for concern, is something that men across the UK should be doing to ensure that a little bit of wobble doesn’t turn into a health issue. Not only is it not aesthetically pleasing, it could be damaging your long term health and survival.”

American musician, DJ, and photographer Moby can’t understand why X-rated films feature men with larger-than-average manhoods and wants to create a flick which won’t make viewers feel inadequate.

Moby – who admits he has watched many adult movies in his lifetime – told Bizarre magazine: “I’ve never understood why porn made for men often stars studly guys with enormous you know?

“Surely that’s intimidating to most guys watching? My porn flick would exclusively feature men with normal-to-titchy-sized penises in order to make viewers feel better.”

Although he is unhappy with the status quo of adult movies, Moby is happy being a “little, bald” white guy. The 45-year-old dance musician started losing his hair 20 years ago and although he was unsure of his hairless look at first he has grown to like it.

He previously said: “I would describe myself as little, bald and white. Small, bald white guys are kind of interchangeable. I used to lament the fact that I didn’t look like a cross between Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom. Then a few years ago I discovered a combination of acceptance and equanimity when I looked in the mirror. There is nothing terribly wrong with my face, even if some of its parts aren’t very inspiring.”

LONDON — According to research carried out in Sweden and Japan, a new strain of gonorrhea, labeled H041, has reached what some scientists are calling "superbug" status, since it cannot be killed by any of the currently recommended treatments for the disease. However, no cases of the strain have yet been found in the U.S.

"Since antibiotics became the standard treatment for gonorrhea in the 1940s, this bacterium has shown a remarkable capacity to develop resistance mechanisms to all drugs introduced to control it," said Magnus Unemo of the Swedish Reference Laboratory for Pathogenic Neisseria, and who reported on his findings at the International Society for Sexually Transmitted Disease Research in Quebec, Canada on Monday.

Meanwhile, in the U.S., researchers have found that even less virulent forms of gonorrhea appear to be becoming more resistant to cephalosporins, the primary class of antibiotics currently used to treat the disease. An analysis conducted by researchers at the Centers for Disease Control, who analyzed 10 years' worth of gonorrheal samples from 30 U.S. cities, found that more samples than ever have shown elevated minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs), the lowest concentration of antibiotics needed to halt the growth of gonorrhea bacteria. These increases in MICs suggest a decline in gonorrhea's susceptibility to antibiotics, the researchers explained in a CDC press release.

The CDC study was published in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report for July 8.

However, they noted, there are no recorded cases of gonorrhea infection in the U.S. which could not be treated by cephalosporins.

But there is concern that that situation may not last.

"Japan has historically been the place for the first emergence and subsequent global spread of different types of resistance in gonorrhea," Unemo said. "Based on the historical data ... resistance has emerged and spread internationally within 10 to 20 years."

If left untreated, gonorrhea can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and ectopic pregnancy in women. It is also a disease that is tested for monthly by adult performers at clinics serving the adult industry.
Usually, I’m skeptical of these studies but maybe there’s something to this one.

Specifically, the study looked at the right index finger. Men with index fingers shorter than their ring fingers on the right hand tend to be better endowed than those with longer index fingers. Researchers studied 144 men who were undergoing routine urological surgery, measuring their fingers as well as their penises immediately after they were anesthetized, in the flaccid and “stretched” position. They found that men with a smaller ratio between the lengths of their two fingers had, in general, a bigger stretched penis.

Quite a few studies have focused on finger length as an indicator of a range of things. Researchers believe the length of the fingers is determined by prenatal exposure to testosterone and estrogen, which could explain the correlation. Some researchers have found that men with a smaller ratio tend to possess a more symmetrical face and thus be more attractive to women, leading to its nickname, the “sexy ratio.”

The study was published in the Asian Journal of Andrology
